I had a decade or more teaching experience, but I still felt shy and unsure of myself.\u00a0 What did the teachers want me to do? Where was I to work? How would the kids, and mine in particular, react to me working in their classrooms? After a few minutes watching the teachers, listening to their style and &#8220;checking out&#8221; the room, I felt at ease. Those minutes observing gave me clues as to the teachers&#8217; styles, how they managed their classrooms and what types of activities and tasks I&#8217;d be taking on. I was ready.<\/p>\n<p>My volunteering lasted weekly through their K-6 years. It gave me a glimpse into their days in school, how they fit into the class and what support they needed from me when we worked at home.<\/p>\n<p>Volunteering is an important role for adults to play in Educating America. If you have an hour to spare once a month, or better yet, once a week, please step-up and step-in to assist a classroom.
