Open-ended Questioning

By | June 20, 2013

Yes and  No  is not the way to go. When you ask questions of students, family members or adults, make them more interactive. It’s not difficult to make the change so answers become discussion bits that lead to more meaningful interactions:

‘Did you have a great day at school?’ becomes ‘What was the most interesting part of math class today?’

‘Did you like the movie?’ becomes ‘What did you think about the way the movie ended?’

Of course you don’t want to overdue it. ‘Do you want to bring your coat?’ doesn’t need to turn into a discussion. By the time you’d finish, the need for the coat may have passed.
