LITERACY #5: Questions to Ask Readers

By | July 2, 2017

Summer! The perfect time to carry around a book and spend time with favorite or new characters and subjects. This is #5 in my 8-part series on Summer Literacy.

Reading can and should be an interactive skill. That means, taking the tine to talk with your kids about what they are reading.

Before reading, ask these questions to help determine if this the the book you want to read:

  • What do you think this story/topic is about?
  • If it is fiction, what do you think the problem for the main character might be?

During after reading, ask clarifying questions:

When you read Fiction:

  • How well are the main characters handling their problems?
  • Do you have questions about what is happening?

For Non Fiction consider asking:

  • What did you learn by reading the book?
  • Did the author provide the information you were looking for?

For any book, you might also ask:

  • What did you enjoy about the book?
  • Why do you think the author wrote the book?
