The Writing Retreat

womenwritingAs a writer I fill my morning and early afternoons writing or editing or marketing. Once in a while I have the opportunity to slip away to a special retreat where I can write and think and leave the day-to-day cares, chores, and phone calls to people back home.

Recently I traveled to the beautiful  second home of a writing friend. She’d assembled a group of fellow writers and invited me to join them. I left my rain and blustery western Washington weather, I thought, for cooler temps and a few snow flurries. Turns out the around the retreat weather settled down to sunshine, mild temps, and clear skies.

I flew into an airport near the home with my tiny computer, a stack of work and excitement about luxuriating in words. My space even had a small desk so I could work my unusual hours (4:30 – noon) and not disturb the others. If only my tiny computer was more fit. That would have saved me hours of anguish when I could no longer save what I wrote. I had to get clever and piggyback on already exisiting files (including writing this one!)

We all spent our early hours working independently then shared cooking dinners followed by evenings of conversation, movies, laughter, and reacquainting ourselves with each other. It felt good to reconnect with them after many years of separation.

A change of scenery, of work space and of writing friends has value. I return home ready to dig in and make as much headway as possible before the wintry holidays arrive.
