Growth Mindset Part 2—Teach Students How They Learn

Growth Mindset is defined as the perceived ability to grow and change through dedication and hard work. The intent: to encourage students as well as adults that it is possible to learn more and become smarter through perseverance on tasks. The bottom line: growth mindset can be taught.

  1. To begin to develop understanding of growth mindset it’s important to talk with students about how they learn.
    Research brain information as is appropriate for your grade level. Its important to remember that the brain is a muscle that grows stronger with use. It constantly makes new connections when it is active. Consult online articles entitled, “You Can Grow Your Intelligence” for further information and additional resources.
  2. Focus on processes and seek strategies to learn how to self-evaluate, embrace challenges, work with others cooperatively and accept setbacks as part of the process. Hard work leads to new understandings.
