I remember my first day as a classroom assistant working in my own kids classrooms. I had a decade or more teaching experience, but I still felt shy and unsure of myself. What did the teachers want me to do? Where was I to work? How would the kids, and mine in particular, react to me working in their classrooms? After a few minutes watching the teachers, listening to their style and “checking out” the room, I felt at ease. Those minutes observing gave me clues as to the teachers’ styles, how they managed their classrooms and what types of activities and tasks I’d be taking on. I was ready.
My volunteering lasted weekly through their K-6 years. It gave me a glimpse into their days in school, how they fit into the class and what support they needed from me when we worked at home.
Volunteering is an important role for adults to play in Educating America. If you have an hour to spare once a month, or better yet, once a week, please step-up and step-in to assist a classroom. It does matter!
