Vocabulary is organic. After we learn to speak, we use words; next we read and use words. I addressed this on October 2nd this year, but I keep thinking about it and how we need to be deliberate in exposing kids to a wide number of specifics naming words.
- We need to use specific words for specific objects and ideas.
- We need to read to kids above their reading level to expose them to an ever-expanding vocabulary.
Here’s one idea from Scholastic
Notice it’s not a list of words. It’s words used in a variety of ways. It could be a recipe, directions on how to do something new, or even a word search. Keep daily as well as unusual words and ideas in front of kids and they’ll soak them up.
