Growth Mindset is defined as the perceived ability to grow and change through dedication and hard work. The intent: to encourage students as well as adults that it is possible to learn more and become smarter through perseverance on tasks. The bottom line: growth mindset can be taught.
How can we get started?
- Remember, mistakes are part of learning so we should expect them. They help us rethink our decisions, eliminate what doesn’t work and sharpen our learning.
- Listen to our self talk and begin to hear how we speak.
As an adult working with students it becomes important to change the way we praise student work. Focus on/ observe/comment on the quality of their work. Consider using reinforcing comments such as:
Concerned and focused teachers and adults must believe in the growth of talent and intelligence in students and must take the time to speak with and encourage their continued growth.
