ABC books bridge all grades. They present everything that’s great about children’s books:
- a single storyline or theme
- a predictable format (A-Z)
- a consistent text (wordless, simple words, phrases or sentences)
- illustrations that enhance the words
- multiple choice in topics (animals to science and math to poetry).
When students write their own, they experience success in writing; they create a book. For kindergarten it may be drawings and single words about My Favorite Foods, Animals, or Things I Like. At fourth grade students expand their skills to write sentences and paragraphs to support their drawings. By eighth grade an a-b-c book becomes paragraphs that include opinion, persuasion and increased details for My Favorite Books, Heroes in History, or The ABC’s of Iceland.
Read and share abc books across the grades. Write your own as well. Enjoy the creativity that young minds generate.
