Ever think about volunteering your talents in a neighborhood school? Great!
Ever wonder what you have to contribute to that neighborhood school? Lots!
Not everyone is a teacher at heart, but we all have worthwhile skills and talents we might share with students. Whether it’s for preschoolers or high school seniors, we all can step up, step in and become part of the solution to enhancing our schools. But how? The list is near-endless. Here’s a few easy ideas to get you thinking:
Share your hobbies/interests (gardening, aviation, history, writing, sewing, woodcraft, star-gazing, drawing, song-writing, pet sitting, helping at a food bank). When you share, you’ll be opening kids up to seeing beyond school. Your hobbies/interest may influence them to look into new ways to use their time and energy.
Share your occupation. Again, you may trigger interest in what you do and lead a students to follow in your footsteps when they are lookingg for a profession.
Walk in and offer to help in the office, work on school clean-up, assist in the school library or other non-student directing activities. (Yes, I realize not everyone is comfortable working with students, but hopefully you could spare an hour of behind-the-scenes support.
Help in classrooms during school hours. There are hundred of ways to support teachers and kids, everything from listening to kids read or share ideas to leading groups to teaching classes based on your talent.
I’d be glad to help you get started, sharing procedure ideas, time commitments, and the skills you need for being an effective volunteer. Mostly it’s your interest in helping kids that teachers look for.
