The more meaningful the activity, the more engage the students. Connections to their lives and their background of information helps.
Allow students to control as much of their learning as possible. That doesn’t mean to make it easy. It means to make it meaning-filled so they use skills they have developed or are in the process of developing.
Create a plan that lets the students self-govern. It is their learning that is most important. When we help take on responsibility for setting goals, governing their own behavior, and working as a team they are learning valuable life-long skills.
Encourage collaboration within their teams and beyond to other teams. It’s exciting to watch engaged students working together to solve issues and share findings.
Self-evaluation is key when students have worked together. Setting up a class discussion where individuals and teams share their success, their problems, and their questions before they evaluate their project adds relevance for their future years in school and beyond. After all learning lasts a lifetime if we’ve done our jobs correctly and with enthusiasm.
