The intent: to encourage students as well as adults that it is possible to learn more and become smarter through perseverance on tasks. It refutes the notion that intelligence is set (a fixed mindset) and sees challenges and failed attempts as opportunities to adjust and improve learnable skills. The bottom line: growth mindset can be taught.
The concept came to the forefront from research done by Carol Dweck at Stanford University . According to Dweck, the author of Mindset—The New Psychology of Success (Ballantine), “How students perceive their abilities plays as a key role in their motivation and achievement.”
