5 R's for Engaging Young Kids in Learning

At home, school, church, or a club or group, consider including these five ideas when working with young children.

  1. Read aloud to promote imagination and word skills.
  2. Rhyme (plus talk, sing, and play together) to develop language skills.
  3. Routines develop independence and help kids be part of the family, school classrooms and beyond.
  4. Recognition not rewards. Praise the activity completed:’I see you have finished the puzzle all by yourself,” “Thank you for helping carry the boxes into the shelves.”
  5. Relationships with family, friends, clubs, and neighbors develops a sense of belonging to various communities around them.
